The Jean Jaurès square THE HISTORIC DISTRICT OF CITADELLE Officially, it is the place Jean Jaurès, in full heart of city. A place of meetings and festivities. But for all the Biterrois, it's "the place of the Citadel". Originally was the castle of Viscounts Trencavel, lords of Beziers. Citadel Street was in front of the main entrance of the castle. Around 1585, the castle was destroyed by the all powerful family of Montmorency, governors of Languedoc, who build, in this strategic place, a powerful fortress. It will be the Citadel, an imposing military structure. But in 1632, one of the Montmorency, Henry II, took up arms against the king and against Richelieu. Captured, he is beheaded. Louis XIII immediately ordered the destruction of the Citadel, which, at his command, was razed by the Biterrois themselves. Today, it is one of the most beautiful squares in the city where regular activities are held throughout the year. In particular, every 20th of every month, the festive evening of the 20th is the wine and every Wednesday from 18h to 21h, a peasant market with quality local products. All around the square are restaurants, breweries, tapas bars, open in the evening and mostly during the day to take a break during shopping in downtown Béziers.
